The Issue

Born and raised in Wilmington, NC, I carry heavy memories etched in my heart - experiences that trigger my urge for change. As a child, I've seen the majestic paradox derived from the crushing image of a beautiful, giant elephant confined into a minuscule, dirt-filled yard, merely for the amusement of visitors. This gentle creature had no room to wander nor any form of companionship that instigated a semblance of joy. This haunting image of hers, alone, listless, in a dust-filled world and what they might have done to her after hours, still sends shivers down my spine. She regrettably lived her entire life like this until her last breath.

Similarly, the sight of large, powerful tigers pacing restlessly back and forth in small, cramped cages is one that still lingers. It is a vision that tells a tale of despair and far removed from the wild and free life they ought to lead. Sadly, 40 years on, not much seems to have evolved at the Tregembo Animal Park.

These precious living beings should run wild and free, not be trapped and showcase on command for the amusement of us humans. It's vital to remember that animals are sentient beings who feel pain and suffer, just as humans do. The Animal Welfare Act has quite explicit guidelines about adequate care for animals, and what we're seeing in Tregembo is far from it. Let us join hands and demand that Tregembo Animal Park, which has showcased a disappointing lack of empathy and consideration, be closed permanently, offering these animals a chance at the life they deserve.
