Demand the Norwegian government stop killing family dogs now!
The Issue
Urgent Update: Both Luk and Teddy were euthanized last week. Teddy 12.09.21, and Luk 12.10.21. We are in shock and mourning after trying to help fight for their lives for almost a year! Our sympathy goes to the grieving and devastated owners.
KILL THE LAW. NOT THE DOGS.
Demand the Norwegian government to stop killing friendly family dogs now.
Imagine taking your dog for a nightly walk. It’s dark and the path is narrow. Suddenly, another dog appears and attacks him. The owner of the other dog falls, resulting in minor scratches and a bruise. She blames your dog and reports it to the police. They take your dog to a secret kennel and decide it should be put to sleep because the woman sustained minor injuries.
That’s what’s happening today in Norway – a country with the reputation of being one of the happiest, healthiest and legally fair countries in the world. But that’s not the case for its dogs and dog owners.
Please sign to stop the killing of Norway’s dogs and ensure a clearer, fairer dog law now!
Since 2014, the government has killed over 117 dogs against the owners will, many based on accusations of scratches or accidents of normal dog behavior.
Case in point: Just this August, a dog named Hayley was put to sleep for a slight nip because the owner couldn’t afford to fight for her. And, Luk, who was sentenced to death for a minor injury and lost his appeal in Supreme Court. His owner was informed that he was put to death in March but it turned out to be false. Then, December 6th, he was said to be euthanized November 16th — again, without the owner being informed or the body being returned. And the finally, the owner got a new death report, stating Luk was euthanized December 10th. Then, there’s Teddy, sentenced to death for biting a person who scared him awake from a deep sleep. His owner lost in court and her last chance to appeal fell on deaf ears. After a long, expensive fight, Teddy was put to sleep December 9th, even though many dog experts verified that Teddy was not threat. Just last summer, the Pyrenees dogs, Askot, Edna, Arko, & Abbey were taken by the police because they barked and got loose a few times. These four dogs are now sentenced to death and are in the police-kennels with a monthly $7000 fee. The owner is desperately fundraising money in order to keep them alive until trial.
Sadly, since 2013, none of the sentences have been reversed after owners appealed.
If a dog is sentenced to death, an owner has two choices: Let the police euthanize your dog right away, or send in a complaint to the National Police Directorate - a complaint that takes up to 6 months to process. You’ll pay about 4700 Norwegian Krones (over 500 US dollars) a week for six months of kennel fees. And that doesn’t include vet costs, court expenses and legal fees. So we have a legal system where only very wealthy or very resourceful people have the opportunity to fight for his dog.
This can go on for over 3 years, and put you in debt for over a million Norwegian Krones, (over hundred thousand US dollars), regardless of whether or not you win the case. And, often, even if the court rules in the dog’s favor, the National Police Directorate can decide to euthanize anyway.
Under the current Dog Law in Norway, a dog is guilty until proven innocent. And even if innocent, can still be put to sleep.
Please sign to stop the killing of Norway’s dogs and ensure a clearer, fairer dog law now!
This dog law was established to make Norway a “safer place for its citizens”. Unfortunately, this law can be interpreted at the discretion of local police with little or no knowledge of normal dog behavior and despite the efforts of world-renowned dog experts.
After years of protests, complaints and demonstrations - plus delays due to Covid – the government is finally ready to amend the law dog this spring.
To this end, we demand an amended law now, where no more dogs like these will be killed.
As the police, media and politicians are not prioritizing the change of this law, we ask you help us put international pressure to clean up this law which is a stain on Norway’s good reputation. Recently, journalists in Norway have tried to talk to the police about Hayley and Luk. But the police refused to comment on single cases. We say Hayley, Luk and Teddy’s lives mattered! We believe all dogs matter. Together, we can stop the needless death of all victims of this corrupt and unjust law.
PLEASE SIGN TO STOP THE KILLING OF NORWAY’S DOGS AND ENSURE A CLEARER, FAIRER DOG LAW NOW!
Here are just a few of the recent heartbreaking stories about the victims:
Luk 2021: Been at the kennel for over 20 months. Denied two appeals in District Court and now lost his last chance of a fair trial when the Supreme Court denied his appeal. After owner being told Luk was killed three times, she finally got a death report stating Luk was euthanized December 10th. Read his story here
Askot, Edna, Arko, & Abbey 2021: These sweet gentle giants never hurt anyone, but are sentenced to death because the owner had another dog who bit a man in self defense. They were taken to a secret kennel that charges a monthly fee of $7000. The owner is currently fundraising in order to afford escalating fee.

Teddy 2021: Been at the kennel since January and between kennel fees, transportation fees, veterinarian visits, and attorney fees, his costs have exceeded 500,000 Norwegian Krones. (This is about 60,000 US dollars). Teddy's owner will submit an appeal to Supreme Court this fall, after it was denied in District court.
