The Issue

My community and I are disheartened by the slow response in implementing the License Plate Readers that were approved by the Council in August 2023. As concerned citizens, we understand the value that these devices would bring. They prove to be effective in identifying criminals and recovering stolen vehicles, adding an extra layer of protection for our community. Additionally, according to the International Association of Chiefs of Police, these license plate readers markedly increase the apprehension and prosecution rates of these criminals (IACP, 2023). Yet, against this backdrop of overwhelming advantages, we are left waiting and wondering why the Mayor is delaying this crucial step towards the safety of our city. In light of the urgent need for enhanced protection and safety, we demand the Mayor to expedite the installation of the already approved License Plate Readers. This procedural foot-dragging must end. Sign this petition now to join our demand for swift action in securing our streets.

The Decision Makers

Freddie O'Connell
Nashville City Mayor
Responded
Mayor O'Connell has consistently said he will bring LPR legislation once Metro Police and his office have crafted an effective policy with sufficient guardrails to protect Nashvillians' privacy. The recent vote by Metro Council to NOT approve the Fusus program shows the importance of crafting a policy that can pass the council. The Mayor is now working daily to assess the best way to move forward on both LPRs and Fusus to ensure his broad public safety strategy, which includes a new Office of Youth Safety and other community work, is successful. As part of that strategy, Metro Police need tools to do their jobs well, and the city needs more officers. That's why Mayor O'Connell and Chief Drake have sworn in more than 100 officers this year, bringing the department ever closer to full staffing. Mayor O'Connell appreciates the feedback he receives from Nashvillians on both pieces of technology, and his office would encourage Nashvillians to make their desires known to council members as well.
