The Issue

An attempt on the life of any presidential candidate is not just a crime — it's an attack on American democracy itself. Last year, Ryan Routh stalked Donald Trump for weeks, scoped out the golf course he frequented, built a sniper’s nest, and prepared to carry out an assassination. Thankfully, he never got the chance to pull the trigger — but make no mistake, his intent was clear.

Now, a jury has found Routh guilty on all counts, including attempted assassination of a major presidential candidate and possession of an illegal weapon. This wasn’t a misunderstanding or a bad moment — this was premeditated. The evidence was overwhelming: burner phones, getaway plans, altered IDs, and even a farewell message to his children before what prosecutors say was meant to be the moment of the attack.

After the verdict, Routh tried to harm himself in the courtroom — a move that only underscored the danger he poses. No one with this level of violent planning and disregard for the law should be shown leniency.

We call on U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon to hand down the maximum possible sentence to Ryan Routh. Life in prison is not only justified — it’s necessary. Anything less risks sending a dangerous message: that plotting political violence carries no real consequences.

Whether you support Donald Trump or not, no American should have to fear for their life while campaigning. Let’s send a clear message that attempts to silence political candidates through violence will be punished to the fullest extent of the law.

Judge Cannon — the country is watching. Do what’s right. Make sure justice is served, and that political violence is never normalized in America.
