We bring to your attention a distressing situation where justice seems to have been denied. Recently, a Broken Arrow man - Shawn Canady - was convicted by a jury on two counts of child sexual abuse, and the jury recommended a sentence of 20 years in prison for each count. However, in a shocking and unacceptable act, Tulsa County Judge Sharon Holmes ignored this jury recommendation and instead gave Canady a probation sentence. This startling disconnection from the principles of justice violates our trust in the judicial system and blatantly disrespects the rights and protections of children against sexual abuse. Child sexual abuse is an appalling crime and leniency towards perpetrators betrays the victims. In the United States alone, about 1 in 7 girls and 1 in 25 boys will be sexually abused before their 18th birthday (National Institute of Justice, 2015). Individuals in positions of power, such as Judge Holmes, have a duty to ensure justice is properly served, and their failure to do so should result in immediate consequences. We, therefore, demand the immediate resignation of Judge Sharon Holmes, as a first step towards reestablishing trust in our justice system and safeguarding children against sexual abuse.
