Demand the DoJ Investigate Lewiston Shooting Fund Fraud

Demand the DoJ Investigate Lewiston Shooting Fund Fraud
The Issue
We ask that Pam Bondi, the United States Attorney General, and the Department of Justice open a federal investigation into the Maine Community Foundation for fraud and misappropriation of funds meant for the victims and families of the Lewiston shooting.
On October 25, 2023, Lewiston, Maine, suffered a devastating mass shooting that claimed 18 lives and injured 13 others. In the aftermath, compassionate donors from across the nation contributed over $6.6 million to the Maine Community Foundation’s (MCF) Lewiston-Auburn Area Response Fund, believing their gifts would directly support victims, survivors, and grieving families.
But that’s not what happened. While $4.7 million went to those directly affected, a shocking $1.9 million was diverted to 29 nonprofits for “broad recovery” efforts—many unrelated to victim needs. Some organizations given funds are Gateway Community Services, which is already being investigated for fraud, and Lewiston Auburn Youth Network, headed by Iman Osman, who resigned as a city councilor and is being investigated for firearms charges.
Victims and families were promised that 100% of donations would go to them, yet they were left in the dark about this split. Conflicts of interest abound: Steering committee members awarded funds to their own organizations, raising serious ethical red flags. We must demand accountability!
The Maine Attorney General’s 2025 review claimed no legal concerns, but with ongoing complaints and evidence of misleading practices, we need a full, independent federal investigation now. Donor intent must be honored, and any misappropriation addressed.
We ask that United States Attorney General Pam Bondi and the Department of Justice:
1. Launch a comprehensive federal investigation into MCF’s handling of the funds, including audits of all distributions.
2. Ensure any misused funds are redirected to victims and families.
3. Implement federal safeguards for future disaster funds to guarantee transparency and victim priority.
Sign this petition to stand with Lewiston victims and hold MCF accountable. Your signature can force real change—share widely to amplify our voices!
