The issue

For 18 years, I proudly served as an Australian serviceman, experiencing firsthand the indispensable support the Salvation Army offers to our troops in the field, particularly during some of the most adverse circumstances. Today, as the shadow minister for Veterans in Western Australia, I feel compelled to raise my voice for the continuation of a service that, for many servicemen and women, is not just beneficial but life-altering.

The Salvation Army, affectionately known as the "Sallymen," have been an unwavering pillar of support for Australian Defence Forces, providing welfare services that include emotional, spiritual, and material assistance. These services are vital not only for the well-being of our troops in training and operations but also for their families. Recently, as noted in an article from The Australian, there have been significant reductions in these support services by the Department of Defence. This move threatens to withdraw essential lifelines that help maintain morale and ensure that our servicemen and women are prepared to face challenges both on and off the field.

The Department of Defence's decision to clip the wings of the "Sallymen" could have profound impacts. The welfare and readiness of our troops should be of utmost priority, recognising that the support provided by the Salvation Army is critical to their operational success. When in the field, facing the stressors of military life and the hardships away from home, the presence of a comforting, understanding, and supportive entity like the Salvation Army can make all the difference.

We call upon the Department of Defence to reconsider this decision. By restoring and protecting the full measure of support services provided to the Salvation Army, we assure that the men and women, who serve our country with honour and bravery, receive the comprehensive care and support they so richly deserve. Our troops should not be deprived of the support systems that sustain their resilience and welfare.

Please sign this petition and help safeguard the welfare of our servicemen and women by ensuring that the Salvation Army continues to deliver its invaluable services.
