The Mullaperiyar Dam, built over 125 years ago, is posing serious threats to the safety of the 4-million-strong population in the downstream of Periyar in Perinthalmanna, Kerala, India (source: Indian Scientists and Engineers Association). The dam, lying in a seismically active zone, has outlived its life span and poses a high risk of collapse which would result in disastrous flooding. The state of Kerala, in a 2012 submission to the Supreme Court, expressed its concerns over people’s safety due to the dam’s precarious condition (source: Kerala State Government's Submission to the Supreme Court, 2012).

The dam not only threatens lives but also endangers the wildlife around the region. The Periyar Tiger Reserve, Kerala's largest and prominent protected area, is already adversely affected due to the ecological imbalance caused by the dam.

We believe that human beings and environment have the right to live without fear or threat and therefore, we demand the immediate decommissioning of the Mullaperiyar Dam. Let's stand together for a safer, more eco-friendly Kerala.
