The Issue

I am deeply concerned about the future of our community and the environment in which my children will grow up. Our ward, known for its diversity and strong sense of community, is now overshadowed by a troubling agreement between our local law enforcement and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). This is why I am calling on the constable of Ward 6 to withdraw the 287(g) agreement with ICE immediately.

The 287(g) agreement essentially allows our local law enforcement officers to perform immigration law enforcement functions. This cooperation not only disrupts the trust between law enforcement and the community it serves, but it also leads to racial profiling, family separations, and fear among residents, including those who are law-abiding immigrants AND citizens.

According to a report by the American Civil Liberties Union, jurisdictions with 287(g) agreements have witnessed increased racial and ethnic profiling complaints. The program has been criticized for promoting practices that many would argue constitute state-sanctioned violence against people who should feel safe in their own neighborhoods.

We have only to watch the disturbing and tragic footage of the murder of Renee Good by a federal ICE agent to fully understand that the methodology being used to enforce immigration law by our government is not helpful, humane, or safe for ANYONE- including US citizens.

We must urge our ward's constable to prioritize building trust within our community over enforcing federal immigration laws, which are not within the local purview. Our focus should be on maintaining peace, safety, and harmony for all residents. Withdrawal from the 287(g) agreement would be a proactive step in fostering a supportive, loving, and united community that stands against state-sanctioned oppression.

It's time for Monroeville to take a stand with its people and set an example for others. Let us unite and demonstrate that our community will not condone policies that promote fear and division.

Please sign and share this petition to demand that the constable of Ward 6 withdraw the 287(g) agreement with ICE, for the future of our children and for the integrity of our community.

Responded
Thank you to everyone who has shared their views on this issue. I want to acknowledge the strong feelings it has raised in our community. The United States is a nation of immigrants, and I support legal immigration and the contributions immigrants make to our communities. At the same time, I believe it’s important that immigration policy and enforcement not interfere with other law enforcement responsibilities or undermine community trust, which is a concern I understand many residents have raised regarding the 287(g) agreement. As I understand this agreement, it is intended to operate within existing legal frameworks and in coordination with federal authorities. From my perspective, local governments should strive to cooperate appropriately with the federal government. Bob Williams Municipal Council Member, Ward 6 – Monroeville
