Demand the Closure of Transitional Shelter Care Facilities Including Hidden Valley.

The Issue

I am deeply moved by the article "Foster teens at Santa Clara County group homes" by Julia Prodis Sulek in the San Jose Mercury, published on Sept 29, 2024. In the heart of San Jose, California, there lies a facility that is a part of an inherently flawed and deeply concerning system, a Transitional Shelter Care Facility located at Hidden Valley. The conditions and treatment of foster teens in this facility, and similar ones across the country, is a grave issue.

Reports indicate emotional, psychological, and sometimes even physical harm being inflicted upon these foster teens. The nature of the foster care system is such that it should provide a safe and supportive environment for the children. However, the reality is far from this ideal.

The lack of proper supervision and negligence in these facilities is deeply troubling. The teens housed here are not given the love, care, and attention they need to thrive. Instead, they face more harm within the confines of these buildings than they would in the outside world. These facilities need to be reassessed and closed down, their respective policies and practices need to be thoroughly revised and reformed. Let's protect our children and make sure they grow up in a better environment.

The need of the hour is immediate action to shut down all of these Transitional Shelter Care Facilities, in Santa Clara County, especially the ones at Hidden Valley, Almaden Expressway, and Riverview, in San Jose and the site in Morgan Hill. We are also calling for the removal from office, Damion Wright, the Director of the Department of Family and Children’s Services and Daniel Little, Director of Social Services. It is high time the authorities take notice and do what's required for the welfare of these foster children. Stand with us and sign this petition to demand closure of these life-damaging facilities and the removal of the County officers who are responsible for the abuse of these foster teens.
