Demand TFL to Offer Subsidised Fares for Domiciliary Carers in London
The Issue
I am a Domiciliary Carer in London. Every day, countless domiciliary carers like myself deliver essential support for our city's most vulnerable residents. However, our hard-earned wages are significantly compromised by the high travel costs associated with bus fares, often reaching £5.25 a day.
In London, hundreds of housebound individuals over 60 rely on our services - services that can require up to four visits a day by two caregivers. Our contracts, frequently zero-hours, only pay us for our time with the service user, leaving carers to shoulder the burden of transport costs.
Although some companies provide a minimal mileage rate of 25p per mile, it barely scratches the surface of the expenses we incur. This financial strain is not only unfair to the hard-working carers but also poses a threat to the continuity of quality care for those who need it most.
Considering that unused freedom passes, allocated to the elderly and disabled in London who are unable to travel due to health issues, represent a great source of potential revenue, we see an opportunity for a simple solution. The allocation of these unused funds towards subsidised fares for domiciliary carers can help alleviate the financial burden for those who play a vital role in the community’s welfare.
We urge Transport for London (TFL) to review its fare regulations and incorporate subsidies specifically for domiciliary carers. With their help, we can continue to provide critical care services, safeguarding our city's vulnerable population without undue economic stress on carers themselves.
Stand alongside London's domiciliary carers and help ensure their necessary travel doesn't compromise their wages. Sign the petition now.
