Our lives were forever altered when a 28-year-old man recklessly gave my 12-year-old son a fatal "drink" of specific lethal chemicals. This grievous loss returned a hollow verdict. With current legislation, this perpetrator may serve a mere 1-6 years on a level 5 felony for reckless homicide. Can one genuinely measure a child's life against such trivial number of years?

Our legal system profoundly disappoints, visibly granting heavier sentences to drug possession charges than to reckless homicide. This current imbalance is not just disheartening; it is a ghastly display of skewed justice. It is a thinly veiled statement that illegal substances' possession is deemed more severe than jeopardising an innocent life intentionally.

In the United States, researchers discovered that a third of all homicides were committed recklessly, often resulting from an individual's careless behavior. Yet, such crimes often result in far less punitive measures. Reckless homicide should constitute a higher-level felony, with penalties aptly reflecting the horrendous impact of these actions.

We plead to our legislators and lawmakers: reevaluate the punitive measures for reckless homicide within our legal system, particularly when the victims are defenseless children.
