Petition: Demand Chuck Schumer Resign as Senate Minority Leader for Betraying Democratic Values

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer has once again demonstrated an unacceptable failure of leadership by voting in favor of a Republican-led Continuing Resolution (CR) that undermines Democratic priorities, emboldens far-right extremism, and weakens the progressive movement. At a time when the Democratic Party must stand strong against Republican obstructionism, Schumer has chosen the path of least resistance—compromising our values instead of fighting for them.

By siding with Republicans on a CR that prioritizes conservative budget cuts, fails to address essential social programs, and neglects key Democratic policies—including funding for education, healthcare, climate initiatives, and protections for marginalized communities—Schumer has effectively abandoned the very constituents who rely on Democratic leadership to protect their interests.

This is not an isolated incident. Time and again, Schumer has capitulated to Republican demands under the guise of “bipartisanship,” refusing to leverage the power of his position to push for real progressive change. Instead of using his influence to hold the line against GOP extremism, he has enabled it—normalizing a political landscape where Democrats are expected to compromise their values while Republicans continue their reckless, destructive governance unchecked.

Why Schumer Must Resign:

• Failure to Oppose GOP Agendas: By supporting a Republican-drafted CR, Schumer has signaled that he is unwilling or unable to stand up for core Democratic values.

• Weak Leadership & Lack of Strategy: Instead of leading a unified opposition, Schumer has repeatedly deferred to a strategy of appeasement, failing to energize the Democratic base or offer a compelling alternative vision.

• Betrayal of Progressive Goals: The current political moment demands bold leadership. Instead, Schumer has chosen political expediency over principles, compromising on issues that directly impact working families, marginalized communities, and the future of the planet.

• Enabling Republican Extremism: By failing to stand firm, Schumer’s leadership has allowed Republican obstructionism to define legislative priorities, further entrenching right-wing control over national policy.

Our Demand:

We, the undersigned, call for the immediate resignation of Chuck Schumer as Senate Minority Leader. The Democratic Party needs a leader who will fight unapologetically for the people—not one who caves to Republican pressure at every critical juncture. If Schumer will not resign, we demand that Senate Democrats vote to remove him and replace him with a leader who will champion bold, progressive policies and refuse to enable Republican attacks on our democracy.
