I am writing this petition as a concerned parent and resident, deeply troubled by the safety of Brookland Parkway, where my son and I had a frightening experience. Just the other day, we narrowly avoided being hit by a speeding car while trying to exit our vehicle in front of our house. The lack of space between moving traffic and parked cars is dangerous and unacceptable.

Brookland Parkway is home to many families, children, and elderly residents. Every day, we witness vehicles speeding through this residential area without regard for the posted speed limits and crosswalk markings. The absence of adequate signage and enforced traffic calming measures makes it hazardous for pedestrians and drivers alike.

We are calling upon local authorities to take immediate action. First, by installing additional speed limit and crosswalk signs to remind drivers to slow down and prioritize pedestrian safety. Next, implementing visible and long-lasting solutions such as allowing vehicles to park right tires into the 4ft barrier between the parking and bike lane, speed humps, extended curbs, and pedestrian islands can bring more order and safety to our community.

Studies have shown that traffic calming measures significantly reduce vehicle speeds and accidents in residential areas. According to the Federal Highway Administration, appropriate speed calming measures can decrease average vehicular speeds by up to 25%, drastically improving safety for all road users.

It is vital that our streets allow safe passage for our children, family members, and the entire community. Enhancing Brookland Parkway isn't just a measure to protect lives—it's a necessary investment in the quality and safety of our neighborhood.
