The Issue
Every student within the Greater Johnstown School District has the right to a learning environment that is safe, respectful, and supportive. Sadly, this has not been the experience for many students who have faced discrimination, harassment, and retaliation when they dared to speak up. These issues are not isolated incidents; they represent a disturbing pattern that undermines students’ mental health, hinders their academic success, and affects their overall well-being.
As a parent of a child within this district, I am deeply concerned about the negative impacts these issues have on our children. It is heartbreaking to watch young learners dread going to school because of fear of harassment or discrimination. It is even more distressing to know that when they do speak up, their pleas for help go unheard, often leading to retaliation rather than resolution.
The very foundation of education is built on the promise of a safe and equitable learning environment for all. A school should be a haven where every child can thrive, not just a place they have to endure.
It is time for the school administration and local education authorities to take urgent and concrete actions to address these grave concerns. We need an independent review of current policies and practices related to student safety and well-being, strict enforcement of anti-discrimination and bullying policies, and regular training for staff to handle reports of harassment effectively and empathetically.
A dedicated task force should also be established, comprising teachers, parents, students, and community members, to monitor progress and ensure accountability.
Our children’s futures depend on us to act now. Let us work together to raise our voices and demand real changes that will foster an inclusive, welcoming, and positive school environment for all students.
Please sign this petition to send a strong message to the Greater Johnstown School District and local community leaders. Our students deserve better, and with your support, we can ensure that they receive it.
