Demand Rights for Students to Use Phones in School Districts

The Issue

My friends and I are constantly under the pressure of a phone-free policy implemented in our school. Even a simple act of checking a single notification can lead to severe consequences. This personal experience is not unique to us, but is shared by countless other students across various school districts. This situation calls for a change.

The phone-free policy imposes an unnecessary strain on students who are already grappling with various academic and personal challenges. Rules should be brought into effect that don't prohibit the usage, but instead encourage responsible and essential use of phones.

As per a report from Pew Research in 2018, 95% of teenagers have access to a smartphone and a vast majority of them - 45% - say they're always online. Moreover, emergency situations may necessitate quick communication between students and their guardians, something that cannot be accomplished if their phones are completely off-limits during school hours.

We understand the concerns about abuse of phone usage, but an outright ban is not the answer. Guiding the students on responsible technology use, and setting clear, reasonable boundaries is. It's important that we equip our next generation with the skills to responsibly navigate the digital world, rather than trying to shield them from it.

Stand with us and urge all school districts to review and revise their phone prohibition policies. Let's shape a balanced approach that doesn't restrict but empowers students. Sign this petition today.
