Demand Ridgeview College Preparatory High School to Uphold Students' Freedom of Dress
The Issue
As students of Ridgeview College Preparatory High School, we are more than just our uniforms. Our clothing choices are a way to express our identities, yet we feel uncomfortable and restricted due to the enforced dress code. More than just a matter of personal expression, the dress code hinders many students' comfort, confidence, and overall school experience.
Although many educational institutions implement dress codes aiming to maintain discipline and unity, studies suggest that such rigid restrictions can negatively affect students' performance and increase rebellious behaviors (American Psychological Association). Moreover, according to The National Center for Education Statistics, only around 20% of public schools in the US implemented a strict dress code during the 2017-2018 school year, bringing into question the necessity of such stringent policies at Ridgeview.
Education experts from the American Civil Liberties Union state that while schools have the right to establish basic dress codes, they cannot infringe upon students' right to free speech and expression.
We are not disputing the need for a dress code, but we urge the administration of Ridgeview College Preparatory High School to revise and implement a more student-friendly dress code allowing us to express our identities freely. This issue is not trivial; it's about respecting students as individuals, boosting their self-esteem, and promoting a healthier learning environment.
We believe that by allowing this flexibility, our school can foster a more inclusive environment that celebrates diversity and personal expression. As such, we now stand together to request the academic administration to consider our appeal seriously.
Please, help us in our quest for this positive change and support our right to free self-expression by signing this petition.
