I am one among many who have personally experienced the harsh reality of gun enhancements in sentencing. I am 29 years old with 3 sons who need their dad on the streets !!! After serving a base term of three years for voluntary manslaughter, I am still being held hostage for an additional ten years due to the use of a firearm in my crime. This is not just my story, but the story of over 7000 inmates currently serving enhancement time beyond their original sentence because they used a gun.

The current system does not apply similar enhancements for other weapons used during crimes. For instance, if someone commits vehicular manslaughter, they don't receive an additional 'car enhancement' to their sentence. Why then should those who used guns be subjected to this extra punishment?

We are not advocating for leniency towards crime but fairness in sentencing. The principle "do the crime, do the time" should hold true without arbitrary and excessive additions based on weapon choice.

We call upon our lawmakers and justice system to review and remove these gun enhancements retroactively from sentences already served by inmates across California. By doing so, we can ensure that punishment is proportionate and just.
