As a concerned parent whose daughter attends school in the Nassau County School District, my personal experience with the potential loss of local control over our schools drives me to petition for the resignation of Superintendent Larry Leaven. The superintendent's inclination towards regionalism threatens to minimize our local school boards' oversight and decrease parental involvement in important decisions regarding our children’s education. Furthermore it threatens the very facets of democracy itself by taking away voting power from Nassau County citizens and enforcing certain policies/protocols within our schools. Research suggests that such centralization can limit innovation and locally tailored initiatives for school improvement (source: 'Education Next Journal'). This puts our children's future at stake, as good schooling is not one-size-fits all but rather should be adapted to fit different needs and circumstances. Therefore, we are asking for Larry Leaven’s resignation from his position at Nassau Boces to ensure that our voices are not drowned out by a larger, broader system of regional control that is out of tune with the unique fluidities of our district. We cannot allow for further control to be taken away from parents and school boards and given to a man who does not have our children's best interest at heart, a man who has nefarious intentions for our children.  Our children's education shouldn't be compromised -- stand with us, sign the petition, and let's ensure our schools remain our own.
