As a member of the Canadian Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce (CGLCC), and as someone serving Canadians grappling with mental health issues, poverty, and homelessness, I am deeply alarmed by the influencial presence of Florence Chapman, a Sobeys representative, on our board. 

Amidst the 2021 Covid-19 pandemic that left small businesses and families struggling, Sobeys unveiled an unsettling side of corporate greed. The grocery chain lifted its food prices, amassing record profits while ordinary families combated the virus, financial hardships, and, in many cases, hunger.

Last year, while Canadians across the country were struggling more than ever, Sobeys recorded a 52% increase in profits - ask yourself, does this make sense?  When Canadians are spending more on the small amount of groceries they can afford and having to go with less, Sobeys was able to record breaking profits.

Members of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community, and other underrepresented communites experience higher rates of unemployment, economic hardship, and access to resources; suffering disproportionately by increased rent and food costs. 

Knowing this, the CGLCC board of directors has allowed a member of the Sobeys executive to have influence over decisions that directly affect the 2SLGBTQUA+ community further.

Shockingly, Florence Chapman, representing Sobeys, sits at the heart of our board even as Sobeys perpetuates a national cost-of-living crisis.

This must be addressed, and accountability must be demanded from Sobeys for the harm that is has caused to the 2SLGBTQIA+ community through its business practices.

If Sobeys is willing to make something as fundamentally important to health and life as groceries a luxury, then what is Florence Chapman willing to do at the head table of the CGLCC?

We are demanding Florence Chapman's immediate and unequivocal resignation from the Canadian Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce.

Achieving this will ensure that our board is composed of representatives who resonate with our mission—helping 2SLGBTQIA+ business owners succeed.
