Ralph Norman, the Representative for South Carolina’s Fifth District, and I share a personal connection. My father is a friend of his, and I grew up attending the same school and playing in the same neighborhood as his grandchildren. It is deeply disheartening to see a man I once knew as principled and fair drift away from the just and steadfast conservative values he once upheld. Today, Ralph has strayed from his traditional conservative roots, blindly following figures like Donald Trump and Elon Musk.

His refusal to hold in-person town hall meetings, a staple of our democratic process, is distressing. As his constituents, we feel unheard and neglected. We have serious issues we want him to address, issues that affect our daily lives, but without these crucial meetings, our voices go unheard. It is time we let him know his direction is one we cannot support.

It is not uncommon for political figures to succumb to pressure. Yet, it is our duty as constituents to hold them accountable. Politicians under democratic systems need to understand that they were elected both by the people and for the people. Going without communication is no way to govern a district. We demand an immediate change to this behavior.

The strength of democracy hinges on checks and balances, accountability, and plain old talking. Norman's non-responsiveness and blind allegiance to influential figures is a step in the wrong direction for our community and our democracy. Let's remind him he's accountable to his constituents.
