As a freshman at Southern University, Baton Rouge campus, I have been extremely frustrated and concerned by the recurring power outages that have plagued our school. We have experienced three significant power outages just within my first month here, each lasting multiple hours and occurring merely days apart. This is more than an inconvenience; it's an urgent issue that affects every aspect of our student life.

The outages have not only disrupted my studies but have significantly impacted my health. Due to a preexisting condition, I have been more vulnerable during these outages, and the lack of reliable electricity has only exacerbated the situation. Moreover, these disruptions spoil groceries and hinder access to essential resources, making it difficult for students to thrive in an environment conducive to learning.

While this problem is new to me as an incoming student, I have quickly learned that it has been an ongoing issue. Southern University has consistently shown an inability to provide the necessary infrastructure to ensure that power outages do not overly burden students and faculty. This is unacceptable for any institution, but particularly for a university committed to high academic standards and the well-being of its students.

We can change the narrative by compelling Southern University to explore and implement renewable sources of electricity. By investing in solar panels or wind turbines, the university can not only provide a more reliable and sustainable energy source but also reduce its carbon footprint and set a benchmark for universities across the United States.

Other institutions have successfully transitioned to using renewable energy and have reaped numerous benefits, including decreased utility costs and increased energy independence. With Louisiana's abundance of sunshine, solar energy is particularly promising. Implementing such initiatives can be supported by available federal and state grants aimed at promoting renewable energy infrastructure in educational institutions.

We urge the administration to prioritize this critical issue and establish a task force dedicated to developing a detailed renewable energy plan by the end of the year. It's time Southern University becomes a leader in sustainable energy solutions, ensuring a stable and forward-thinking campus for current and future students.
