Demand Reimbursement for Wrongfully Convicted Charged For there Food and Water

Demand Reimbursement for Wrongfully Convicted Charged For there Food and Water
The Issue
In 1987, myself along with Darren Hall and Ellis Sherwood, known as The Cardiff Newsagent Three, were wrongfully imprisoned for a crime we did not commit. After nearly 12 years in prison, we were able to prove our innocence in 1999. Although we received compensation for this grave miscarriage of justice, £37.500 was deducted from each of our awards to cover the cost of our 'bed and board' during our unjust imprisonment.
In the wake of Andy Malkinson's conviction being quashed in 2023, Alex Chalk KC MP from The Ministry of Justice stated that such charges would be stopped. He also mentioned considering reimbursing those who have already been charged this deduction. However, despite multiple attempts by my solicitors over the past six months to engage him on this matter, he has refused to respond.
This is not just about us three; it's about every individual who has been wrongfully convicted and then charged for their stay in prison - a place they should never have been in the first place. It is estimated that hundreds could be affected by this policy (source: Innocence Project). This practice adds insult to injury for victims of wrongful convictions and must be addressed immediately.
We urge Decision Maker: The Rt Hon Shabana Mahmood MP, Lord Chancellor and Secretary of State for Justice and The Ministry of Justice to honor their words - stop charging innocent people for their time spent in prison due to wrongful convictions and reimburse those who have already paid these unjust fees. Please sign this petition demanding justice not only for us but also all victims of wrongful convictions who suffered similar financial injustices.
The Ministry of Justice are refusing to respond to my Lawyers Letters. We need your help. Guilty People don't pay for their rightful stay in prison so why should innocent people have too. I lost my daughter to cot death whilst I was on remand and my step father who brought me up at an early age died whilst I was in prison too I was just a kid at the time. Please support us if you can. I am very grateful to you all.
