The Issue

Indiana gave gasoline and diesel drivers a six-month gas-tax holiday, but electric vehicle and hybrid owners still paid their full annual supplemental registration fees.

Indiana’s EV ($242) and hybrid ($81) fees are intended to help replace gas-tax revenue that these vehicles pay less of—or do not pay at all. When the state paused the gas tax for six months, gasoline and diesel drivers received a financial break. EV and hybrid owners received no comparable relief, even though their annual fees serve a similar transportation-funding purpose. This lack of parity adversely affects over 180,000 Indiana residents and their families.

We ask Indiana’s state government to correct this imbalance by providing a refund or registration-fee credit for EV and hybrid owners for one-half of the annual supplemental registration fee, reflecting the six months covered by the gas-tax holiday.

This petition does not seek to eliminate EV or hybrid registration fees. All drivers should contribute fairly to maintain Indiana’s roads. It asks only that EV and hybrid drivers receive equal treatment when the state provides temporary gas-tax relief to other drivers.

By signing, you ask Indiana leaders to:

• Provide a proportional refund or credit for EV and hybrid supplemental fees during the gas-tax holiday.

• Ensure future transportation tax relief treats all vehicle owners fairly.
