Demand Reform; UK Government & Parliament

The Issue

Demand Reform in UK Governance and Parliamentary Accountability.

The UK Government and Parliament operate entirely on taxpayer funds. There is no hidden or secret source of money — every penny spent comes from the taxes paid by the public. All individuals within the government and Parliament are not freelancers; they work for the taxpayers. Their role is to use our tax money responsibly to make decisions that benefit the UK, its citizens, and its future.

It’s essential to remember that the government is made up of individuals empowered to help the UK thrive. They must support the economy, collaborate with local communities, and improve the daily lives of citizens. The decisions they make must reflect the long-term welfare of the country.

However, there is a pressing need for change in how the system operates. To ensure that public dissatisfaction and mismanagement can be addressed swiftly, we propose the following reform:

1. Post-General Election Probationary Period

- After every general election, the Prime Minister and their chosen government should be subject to a six-month probationary period. During this time, if there is significant public dissatisfaction with the performance of the government, citizens should have the right to trigger a vote of no confidence.

- False promises or lies in manifestos will be exposed during the probationary period. This reform will discourage candidates for Prime Minister from making false or unrealistic promises, as failure to meet expectations could lead to public calls for a new general election.

- PDCA allowances (Prime Minister's discretionary allowances) will not be available to any Prime Minister who does not exceed the probationary period or who faces a public vote of no confidence. This is solely the right of every UK taxpayer, ensuring the public has direct power over their government.

2. Accountability for Squandering Public Money

- Politicians who are found to be squandering public money on projects like HS2, where there are credible concerns or reports that the project was destined to fail from the design stage, should be permanently removed from any future positions of power. Mismanagement of large-scale projects at the cost of the taxpayer is unacceptable.

- Such actions demonstrate a failure to responsibly manage the hard-earned money of UK citizens and should disqualify those responsible from holding any public office in the future. This is essential to restore public trust and ensure the government is truly working for the people.

3. Removal from Office for Legal Violations

- Any person in government or Parliament who is removed from their duties for breaking the law will also forfeit any future pay, bonuses, or allowances. This measure ensures that those who violate public trust will not continue to benefit financially from their time in office.

We call on the UK Government to pass legislation ensuring that these reforms are made law. It is crucial to implement these changes to provide the public with more control over government accountability and to encourage leaders to act in the country's best interest. We desperately need a system that reflects the demands of a modern democracy and allows the public to hold those in power to a higher standard.
