The Issue

Scratch.mit.edu is a platform adored by children for learning and creativity. However, its growing neglect of community safety is alarming. The failure to properly moderate the website poses a danger to its young users. Countless reports of predatory behavior have surfaced—yet, mysteriously, those attempting to report such behavior find themselves unjustly banned.

The website's guidelines clearly outline a commitment to protecting its young community. Unfortunately, this promise has fallen short as the site's lack of action has rendered these protections meaningless. Instead of effectively addressing these complaints, community members are wrongfully punished and the issue of predators is left unaddressed.

What exacerbates the problem is Scratch's lack of attention to these critical concerns while focusing on secondary features like memberships. By prioritizing these over vital safety measures, the platform sends a worrying message about its priorities, seemingly valuing expansion over the well-being of its users.

Not only that, but the websites fails to continue to actually handle said complaints (example, occasionally hackers have manage to hack into accounts and mass share projects that have said the n-word over and over that also would crash the website page, mass following caused by robots, predators messing with kids, etc.) and yet their decision is to make memberships, add more AI components and even just make the site even worse. The website isn't even considered safe anymore, and people are just being traumatized or even abused on the website. If one reports a bully, it gets them banned. The site might be more of a mental hazard and a danger to kids these days due to the failure of moderation and safety the site has promised to provide.

This is a call to action. Scratch must prioritize its moderation policies and act effectively to protect its community. It’s time for Scratch to take the proactive steps necessary to review and reform its content moderation system.

Improve training for moderators, and ensure all reported cases undergo thorough investigation to safeguard the community. Reinforce the values set out in the website's guidelines and truly make Scratch a safe space for children to learn and grow.

Please sign this petition to urge Scratch.mit.edu to undergo necessary reforms and protect its community as it originally promised.
