Demand reform in child protective services
The Issue
Child Protective Services (CPS) was established with the noble mission of safeguarding vulnerable children from abuse and neglect. However, the current system is plagued with flaws that prioritize bureaucratic procedures over the genuine welfare of children. My personal experience with CPS was a harrowing journey filled with neglect and trauma, showcasing the urgent need for systemic reform.
I was once a victim of the deep-seated problems within CPS. Instead of being protected, I was mistreated by foster parents, which escalated to being a victim of sex trafficking. My placement in remote, insecure environments exacerbated my vulnerability, culminating in sexual assault by a foster parent's son. These are not isolated incidents – the system failed me, it has failed many before me, and it continues to fail countless children today.
The traumatic impact of unnecessary or hasty child separations cannot be overstated. Children are often uprooted without concrete evidence of danger, leading to psychological scars that last a lifetime. In some cases, children are placed in foster care environments that are no less harmful than the situations they were removed from. This is perpetuated by a CPS structure that lacks sufficient oversight and transparency, allowing these atrocities to occur unchecked.
Moreover, CPS is often driven by funding dynamics that can overshadow the actual needs of children. The focus sometimes drifts towards maintaining institutional momentum rather than prioritizing the preservation of families and the well-being of children. It is crucial to reevaluate protocols and implement effective oversight mechanisms to ensure decisions are made in the best interests of children, not the system.
To bring about meaningful reform, CPS must prioritize family preservation and community-based solutions whenever safe and possible. This involves implementing more robust checks and balances, thorough training programs for caseworkers, and developing support structures for families in crisis to reduce unnecessary removals.
Our goal is to initiate a comprehensive review of CPS policies nationwide, ensuring accountability, transparency, and a realignment with its original mission. We aim to protect children from harm without causing unintended distress and to uphold the sanctity of family bonds where safe.
Join me in demanding necessary reform in Child Protective Services to protect our future generations. By signing this petition, you are lending your voice to countless children who deserve a safer and more compassionate system. Let's work together to ensure CPS becomes a true sanctuary, not a gateway to further harm.
Please sign this petition to bring the necessary changes to CPS, so that no child has to endure what I did.
