Although Valerie Becket, assistant county manager, has been reassigned, and Michael Mendel, MCACC director, has been fired, we have not observed any significant changes.
We are hopeful that the new individuals in charge will improve the shelter, but we are not going to stop speaking up until it happens.
The most recent outrage was over the killing of Cerrit, a Rottweiler who had been pulled by a rescue. The shelter claimed that one step was missed, but when we received the public record request, they marked that they did check the rescue email.
We are used to the constant lies in order to justify their mistakes. They did apologize for killing him, but it sounded more like they were trying to throw a staff member under the bus rather than take responsibility for an organization that is failing the community and the animals in their charge.
We will continue to speak until they make progress in the right direction, the toxic individuals at the shelter are gone, and that saving lives is the most important goal.
