Although we have no official word yet, it appears that the man who continually demanded that all involved with Maricopa County Animal Care and Control keep emotions out of decisions, couldn't keep his own emotions under control.
According to witnesses, he started yelling, cursing, and punching the air with his fists at a morning staff rally (10 @ 10). Several employees felt threatened and filed complaints with HR. It appears that he has been out of the office for the past week. Employees are reported to be hopeful that he will be gone for good.
He came in as an inexperienced, egotistical, rude bully and has done little to change that perception. In fact, his behavior has become increasingly concerning according to staff. It appears likely that Valerie Beckett, the assistant county manager, actually chose him as director months before she posted the position. He came in with his 'airport' idea and quickly alienated staff, volunteers, rescues, non-profits, and the community.
If they decide not to fire him, it will be extremely difficult for him to direct the shelter. Many others have been fired for far less. All the while, the shelter is underperforming and dogs are needlessly dying. Please read the attached update which was written prior to this latest event.
There are a number of things happening behind the scenes that may work to put pressure on the shelter to do better. Groups of individuals are working to inform the cities that their contracts are being breached, the state legislature has concerns about state law violations, leaders in the animal welfare community are working on ways the shelter can improve, and others are looking at ways to bring more attention to this issue through protests, educational opportunities, and the media.
Please continue to ask your friends, family, and acquaintances to sign and share the petition. Together we can make a difference.
Sincerely,
Lorena Bader
