The Issue

Antisemitism is on the rise globally and in America, erasing the invaluable contributions of Jews in many fields. One such field that owes much of its identity to Jewish creativity, resilience, and passion is Broadway Theatre.

The Museum of Broadway stands as a testament to the rich history and cultural impact of Broadway. However, it's disheartening to see the lack of recognition for the undeniable impact of Jewish individuals—especially Jewish immigrants—in shaping Broadway throughout the Twentieth Century. This oversight neglects the vibrant history and the pioneering spirit that Jewish communities brought to the performing arts during one of the most transformative periods of American theater.

At the turn of the twentieth century, Jewish immigrants came to America seeking opportunity and refuge, finding a home in the arts. They took center stage in the development of Broadway, both literally and figuratively. From composers like George Gershwin to playwrights like Arthur Miller, Jewish artists were and still are, critical catalysts in the evolution of music, narratives, and the essence of the theatrical experiences that have defined Broadway.

These creative minds not only entertained millions but also enriched the cultural fabric of America at large by tackling topics of social import and human experience through art. Their plays and music have left an indelible mark on society, pushing boundaries and prompting thoughtful reflection.

For generations, Jewish artists have fostered community and inspired progress, and it is imperative their stories and achievements be told. The absence of such recognition contributes to the broader issue of historical erasure and lowers the defense line against rising antisemitism.

We call upon the Museum of Broadway to intentionally and thoughtfully include a dedicated exhibit or section that exclusively focuses on the contributions of Jewish people, particularly immigrants, who have been instrumental in the creation and progression of Broadway theater as we know it. Such recognition will offer a more inclusive and truthful narrative that honors Jewish contributions comprehensively.

Sign this petition to urge the Museum of Broadway to rectify this oversight and celebrate the vital role Jewish artists have had in shaping one of America's most cherished cultural icons.
