Demand Real Medical Care for Aurora ICE Detainees
The Issue
People held at the GEO Group's ICE detention facility in Aurora, Colorado are getting sick, and no one is responding. A new community accountability report from the Shut Down GEO Aurora Coalition, the group's third since it began monitoring the facility, reviewed 56 grievance letters from 49 different people inside. More than 80% of those letters pointed to the same failure: medical neglect.
One case shows how bad it can get. According to Brandon Gehrke, an organizer with Aurora Unidos CSO, a detainee got sick inside a cell shared with eight other men and asked for medical help for several days, only to be ignored. The illness then spread to everyone else in the cell. "You can kind of see how the lack of response for medical emergencies can actually go and spread inside this facility because they're not providing people with face masks or adequately treating them in a timely manner," Gehrke said.
Requests for tuberculosis testing have followed the same pattern, according to AnnaRose Craig, a coordinator with the Shut Down GEO Aurora Coalition. She said a detainee asking for a TB test through the facility's internal request system is likely to be ignored, adding that the coalition has "seen in multiple cases of people inside who have requested tuberculosis tests and have been ignored." A confirmed tuberculosis case was already found inside the facility last month, yet GEO Group and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) have denied state health investigators access to the building.
Of every grievance letter reviewed, only 4% were even acknowledged. None were resolved.
People in custody still have a right to basic medical care. GEO Group and ICE must guarantee real, timely treatment, including tuberculosis testing, and let public health investigators inside. Sign the petition to demand medical accountability at the Aurora detention facility before more people get sick.
