Demand prompt action on bullying incidents at schools
The Issue
Demand for Transparency, Immediate Notification, and Accountability Regarding Student Safety and Bullying!
We, the undersigned parents, guardians, and concerned community members, are writing to demand a critical update to how the School handles incidents of bullying, harassment, and intimidation.
While we appreciate the educational mission of our school, we have observed an unsettling trend of bullying and some aggressive behavior. This environment of intimidation compromises the safety and emotional well-being of our children. We believe that transparency is the only way to ensure accountability and to foster a truly supportive community.
The Problem: The "Privacy" Gap
Currently, when a bullying incident occurs, parents are often left in the dark. Schools frequently cite the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) as a reason to withhold detailed incident reports or visual evidence from the parents of the victim. This lack of transparency prevents parents from being full partners in their child's recovery and safety planning.
Our Demands:
Immediate Parental Notification: We demand a policy requiring the school to notify the parents or guardians of both the victim and the alleged aggressor within two (2) hours of a reported or witnessed incident involving physical aggression or credible threats.
Implementation of Redaction Technology: We urge the district to invest in and utilize digital redaction and masking software. This technology allows the school to share incident footage or photographic evidence with the parents of the involved parties by blurring the faces of uninvolved bystanders, thereby satisfying privacy laws while maintaining transparency.
Comprehensive Incident Reports: Parents must be provided with a detailed summary of the school’s DASA (Dignity for All Students Act) investigation findings, including the specific steps being taken to ensure the victim’s safety moving forward.
Zero-Tolerance for Intimidation: We call for a renewed commitment to a culture where respect and empathy are non-negotiable, and where aggressive behavior is met with consistent, meaningful consequences and restorative measures.
Conclusion
Our children deserve to feel secure in their place of learning. Safety and privacy are not mutually exclusive; with modern technology and a commitment to communication, we can achieve both. We urge the Board of Education to adopt these measures immediately to protect our students and restore parental trust.
