Parents in the Port Arthur Independent School District are currently being denied their rights to fully participate in their children's educational programs and ceremonies. The district, still adhering to COVID-19 protocols, selectively allows parents to attend certain events while barring them from others. This includes simple yet meaningful activities like having lunch with our children. While we understand and respect the need for safety measures against COVID-19 and potential school shootings, we believe that there are necessary precautions that can be implemented without completely excluding parents from involvement.

Research shows that parental involvement is crucial for a child's academic success (National Education Association). Therefore, it is essential that the district re-evaluates its policies to ensure they do not hinder this important aspect of education.

We call on the Port Arthur ISD board members to review these restrictive policies and find a balanced solution that prioritizes both safety and parental involvement. Please sign this petition if you believe parents should have the right to actively participate in their children’s educational journey at Port Arthur ISD. 

A los padres del Distrito Escolar Independiente de Port Arthur se les niega actualmente el derecho a participar plenamente en los programas y ceremonias educativos de sus hijos. El distrito, aún adhiriéndose a los protocolos COVID-19, permite selectivamente a los padres asistir a ciertos eventos y les prohíbe asistir a otros. Esto incluye actividades simples pero significativas como almorzar con nuestros hijos. Si bien entendemos y respetamos la necesidad de medidas de seguridad contra el COVID-19 y posibles tiroteos en las escuelas, creemos que existen precauciones necesarias que se pueden implementar sin excluir completamente a los padres de participación.

Las investigaciones muestran que la participación de los padres es crucial para el éxito académico de un niño (Asociación Nacional de Educación). Por lo tanto, es esencial que el distrito reevalúe sus políticas para garantizar que no obstaculicen este importante aspecto de la educación.

Hacemos un llamado a los miembros de la junta directiva de Port Arthur ISD para que revisen estas políticas restrictivas y encuentren una solución equilibrada que priorice tanto la seguridad como la participación de los padres.
