Oracle and OpenAI are two of the most powerful and profitable technology companies in the world. Together, they are building a 250-acre data center in Saline Township, Michigan — a project now valued at $43 billion. And they want local taxpayers to foot a massive portion of the bill.

Saline Township was recently forced by a court order to approve a 12-year, 50% property tax abatement for the project, known as "The Barn." At full value, the development would generate roughly $294 million in taxes each year — money that would fund local schools, county services, and public infrastructure. Under the approved deal, an estimated $105 million per year in education funding alone could be lost over the life of the abatement.

Residents showed up twice to oppose this deal. They were overruled — not by their elected officials, but by a lawsuit filed by the developer, The Related Companies, after township trustees tried to pump the brakes. Michigan already exempts data centers from state and local use taxes. Handing billion-dollar corporations a property tax break on top of that is a giveaway communities cannot afford.

Enough is enough. If Big Tech wants to build here, they should pay here.
