Demand Ofcom revoke licences for livestreaming the execution of the Fort Hood shooter
The Issue
The act of terrorism committed by the Fort Hood shooter, Nidal Hasan, remains a dark and painful memory for many. As someone deeply moved by the tragedy and the loss faced by the victims' families, I am appalled by the idea that anyone would consider broadcasting or livestreaming the execution of a criminal for public consumption. Such an act would not only demean the involved individuals but also sensationalize violence and death, contrary to the values of our society.
The United Nations, through its various human rights programs, has explicitly stated that public executions, especially when broadcasted, violate human rights principles. Live streaming executions crosses a significant ethical line, further augmenting the pain for the victims’ families and diminishing the human dignity we should strive to uphold.
Ofcom, the UK's communications regulator, has clear standards concerning harm and offense as outlined in Section Two of the Broadcasting Code. These standards exist to protect viewers from content that could potentially cause undue distress or harm. Allowing or even not promptly addressing the livestreaming of such events would be a direct breach of these standards.
Currently, Ofcom retains the authority to suspend licences in the case of grievous compliance issues. However, there is a need for more specific and proactive measures. Ofcom should publicly commit to immediately revoking the licence of any broadcaster or livestreamer that defies these standards by airing such executions. This declaration would serve as a deterrent against potential offenders and uphold the integrity of our media landscape.
Therefore, I urge Ofcom to take a stand and explicitly state its intention to revoke licences without delay when broadcasting live or near live executions is concerned. This action will not only align with international human rights norms but also assert the respect for humane viewing standards within the UK.
Please join me in calling for Ofcom to safeguard our community’s moral standards by signing this petition. Your signature will help protect human dignity and prevent the exploitation of horrific events for media gain.
