The Issue

9th August 2025: During recess, my friends and I shared a common concern, we were in unbearable pain. We sat under a big tree, gripping our bodies in discomfort. One of us had a stomach ache, another felt a throb in their back, and I felt drained all day, no amount of tears or frustration relieved our suffering. We had to endure it, for who could alleviate natural pain?

Menstruation is a natural part of life that many women and girls experience, often with intense discomfort and pain. Still, countless females have no choice but to go to school or work. They often take sick leave or half-days when their bodies need rest and care.

About 90% of women worldwide experience dysmenorrhea, or menstrual cramps, with 10% saying the pain disrupts their daily activities.

Providing two to three days of paid menstrual leave per month would be a significant step toward gender equality. Countries like South Korea, Indonesia, and Japan already offer menstrual leave to their female citizens.

This policy would reduce the stigma around menstruation and acknowledge the physical challenges women face. By introducing menstrual leave, employers and schools can make a real difference. This move would show true empathy and understanding for health issues that affect women, ensuring they can reach their full potential without compromising their health.

I urge decision makers to act quickly to put menstrual leave policies in place in workplaces and schools. Support a caring approach that recognizes and respects women's health needs by signing this petition. Menstrual health should be valued and recognized as essential to women's overall well being.
