After the unfortunate incident of July 18th, the Maruti-Suzuki management, Government of Haryana and the corporate media have unilaterally declared the workers as ‘criminal’ and ‘murderers’ and 149 workers are therefore now in jail. The report of Human Rights organization PUDR also reveals the fact that workers have been subjected to barbaric torture in police custody in an attempt to extract a confession. It is clear that Haryana Government, Maruti-Suzuki management and the police administration have shelved all the constitutional rights of the workers in this entire proceeding directed at suppression of workers. Thus, now it is resposibility of every justice loving and sensitive citizen of India to stand and support the struggle of Workers of Maruti Suzuki.

Letter to
Mr. Manmohan Singh, Honourable Prime Minister, Government of India
Demand of a high level impartial inquiry of the July 18th incident

Dear Sir,

As you must already be aware, the unilateral anti-labour activities from the side of management and police-administration, like filing of fake cases, arrests, torture under police custody, termination of 546 workers without any investigation, have continued uninterrupted against the workers of Maruti-Suzuki Manesar plant for last five months. Apart from this, the future of around 2000 contract workers also hangs in balance. Hundreds of workers with their families have been pushed onto the roads by these arbitrary proceedings carried out without any investigation whatsoever.
This incessant cycle of violence and repression against the workers is being practiced in the industrial belt of Gurgaon-Manesar-Dharuhera for last seven years. Incidents in Honda, Rico and now Maruti-Suzuki, are examples of suppression of workers who were demanding implementation of labour laws and fighting for their right to form unions. The voice of workers has been similarly crushed in dozens of other factories in this industrial belt. Only this time oppression and tyranny has crossed all bounds.
We, the workers, the intellectuals and the youth would like to inform you of our resolve to participate in this struggle for justice and we would like to stress that the incident of violence in Manesar plant of Maruti-Suzuki on July 18th is a representative event that expresses the discontent simmering amongst workers against the suffocative and exploitative environment in the factories across the nation. The attempts to maintain industrial peace through oppression and persecution and by obscuring the real reasons behind this incident will only give rise to even more widespread unrest.

Therefore, we demand that –

1. All arrested workers be immediately released and all fake cases be withdrawn. All artifice of violence and repression against the workers - and their families - in the jail, inside the company and outside the company be immediately put to an end.
2. A high level inquiry be conducted of the incident of July 18th in Maruti-Suzuki Manesar and the role of management in the event.
3. All 546 suspended workers be reinstated and temporary workers be given permanent stature.
4. A special investigation committee be formed to investigate the serious violations of labour laws in all the factories along with Maruti-Suzuki in Gurgaon-Manesar region and representatives of labour organizations, experts of labour laws and democratic right activists be included in this committee.
5. The paramilitary forces and armed security guards be removed from the workplace and the workers should not be forced to work under the current environment of terror due to the presence of such elements in the workplace.

With Regards,
Citizens Front in Support of the Maruti-Suzuki Workers’ Movement
