Demand NPR to End Advertising Relationship with BetterHelp

The Issue

We, the undersigned, call upon you to reconsider your association with BetterHelp, a company whose questionable practices in mental health care have raised significant ethical concerns and potentially compromised the well-being and confidentiality of countless clients.

My name is Megan Gunnell. As the creator of this petition and admin of one of the highest engaging facebook platforms for psychotherapists (Thriving Therapists with 24,000+ members), this issue is of great interest to myself and my community.

BetterHelp’s business model relies on misleading advertising and bait-and-switch tactics which often leads vulnerable individuals to false promises of reliable mental health support. They have created false online directories using therapists information without permission, listing that therapists are not accepting new clients and leading consumers to a BetterHelp therapist.  Furthermore, reports of inadequate data protection practices raise serious concerns about clients' confidential information, a core aspect of trust in mental health care.

Additionally, BetterHelp’s exploitative pay structure for therapists diminishes the value of professional mental health work, undermining the dedication of licensed providers and threatening the integrity of our profession. Their approach not only impacts the referral base for local practices but also damages the overall quality of mental health care.

As a trusted media platform, we ask that you take a stand for transparency, professionalism, and the well-being of mental health clients by disassociating from BetterHelp. By doing so, you would reaffirm your commitment to ethical standards and help guide your audience to resources that truly prioritize care. Supporting BetterHelp through advertising partnerships indirectly endorses practices that may mislead consumers, particularly those in need of accessible, ethical mental health resources.

Given the gravity of the matter and our responsibility to ensure therapists' professional growth and our clients' wellbeing, together, let's demand responsible advertising from NPR.
