Stop the Suffering: Call for the NHS to Treat TMJ Disorders at the Root
The Issue
We call on the NHS and UK Government to urgently recognise the link between body posture, malocclusion and Temporomandibular Joint Disorders (TMJD), and to update national guidelines and care pathways accordingly.
Across the UK, thousands are silently suffering with chronic jaw pain, migraines, clicking, locking, neck and back tension, breathing difficulties and full-body stiffness — symptoms deeply rooted in undiagnosed or mistreated TMJD. Yet, in both NHS and private care settings, patients are routinely dismissed, misdiagnosed or handed ineffective splints, vague “stress” advice or short-term painkillers. Meanwhile, the real underlying issues — head position, cervical alignment, muscle imbalances, poor breathing mechanics, spinal tension and pelvic instability — are not even being assessed.
The consequences are devastating. Young people, women, neurodivergent individuals and long-suffering patients are being left in a medical void — unsupported, gaslit and forced to bounce between different departments with no answers, no help and no clear care pathway. For many, it becomes a lifelong struggle with chronic pain, nervous system dysfunction and worsening physical and mental health.
If nothing changes, thousands more will face preventable suffering, long-term disability and immense psychological distress — with costly knock-on effects for both patients and the NHS. But if we shift to a 21st-century, integrative model of care, rooted in biomechanics, postural therapy, craniofacial rehabilitation and whole-body alignment, lives could be transformed.
“There is a direct connection between your craniofacial system, head position, neck, spine, hips, pelvis, legs, feet, and your body’s core.”
— Dr. Priya Mistry, TMJD specialist (USA)
The science backs this:
- Lee et al. (2016): Forward head posture increases mechanical load on the TMJ.
- Bordoni et al. (2020): Diaphragm and pelvic dysfunctions are directly related to jaw pathology.
- Kapandji (2007): Cervical spine misalignment affects TMJ mechanics and jaw motion.
Forward-thinking experts such as Dr Priya Mistry, Dr John Mew, and Dr Mike Mew are leading the charge — championing a postural, craniofacial and functional approach that actually works. But British healthcare is lagging dangerously behind.
Therefore, we are calling on MPs, NHS commissioners, medical schools and national health bodies to:
- Acknowledge TMJD as a complex postural and neuromuscular disorder, not just a dental nuisance
- Expand training for GPs, dentists, physiotherapists, and ENT specialists to recognise and refer appropriately
- Create interdisciplinary TMJD clinics that integrate postural therapy, craniofacial analysis, airway diagnostics, and pelvic-spinal assessment
- Commission UK-wide research and guidance updates to reflect modern evidence
- End the gaslighting of patients, especially those who don’t “fit the mould
The UK can no longer afford to treat the jaw as if it exists in isolation. TMJD IS a full-body issue — and treating it as such will save lives, restore function, and alleviate long-term pressure on NHS services.
We urge you to stand with the patients affected. Please sign this petition to demand a modern, compassionate, bodywide approach to jaw health in Britain.
It is our sincere hope that by pushing for reform in the UK, we can set a precedent for change across the entire world — so that EVERY healthcare system, in EVERY country, finally begins to recognise and properly treat TMJD as the complex, systemic, and life-altering condition it truly is. The science is there. The patients are speaking. The time to act is now 📣
If you're still unsure how posture, breathing and jaw pain are connected or if you're someone who's been dismissed by doctors who told you "it's just stress" — please take two minutes to watch this video by Dr. Priya Mistry. She breaks it down in simple terms, showing how poor posture, muscle tension, and spinal alignment are directly linked to TMJ dysfunction.
It's not just in our heads. And it’s time the NHS caught up.
