The Issue

Last week, several instances of hate speech by Dr. Eva Lonn, a prominent cardiology at McMaster University, came to light. Now, another McMaster employed professor and physician, Dr. Jeffrey Greenspoon, has threatened a Palestinian PhD student's academic career. The PhD student, Ghada Sasa is completing her PhD at McMaster University in International Relations.

On October 26th, Sasa shared a link to a petition calling for Canadian MPs to stand in solidarity with Palestine and end the genocide. Greenspoon replied to this tweet saying "I will work day and night to ensure your antisemitic self doesn't get a PhD from McMaster". He has since deleted his twitter account.

Greenspoon is an Oncologist and Associate Professor employed by McMaster University working at the Hamilton Health Sciences Juravinski Hospital and Cancer Centre. Earlier today, Sasa shared on her social media that almost 2 weeks after the incident, McMaster has still not reached out to her or released a public statement condemning this case of harassment and racism.

It is extremely disturbing to see that Greenspoon felt comfortable enough to publicly threaten Sasa's academic career. It is unacceptable for someone in a professional capacity like him to slander and harass students.

We firmly demand that McMaster University take the necessary steps to investigate this incident and terminate Greenspoon's employment. It is absolutely unacceptable to allow a medical professional like this to continue interacting with student learners within our diverse Hamilton community.

The impact of his tweet goes beyond his personal beliefs. It's not just about the threat he made, but the fact that he felt comfortable using his influence and privilege to shape a student's career.

IMPORTANT: I strongly encourage all of  you to file a report with the medical governing board in Ontario. By doing so, both the university and her employer will be notified, and they will be compelled to address the matter with utmost seriousness.

McMaster University needs to take decisive action against Professors Eva Lonn and Jeffrey Greenspoon for their unacceptable behavior. Our community, the student body, and students from all over Ontario and beyond need to come together and demand accountability from our educational institutions.

Please sign this petition urging McMaster University to investigate these allegations thoroughly and take appropriate action. Your signature will make a difference!
