The issue

In a critical match during the ongoing NRL season preliminaries, an egregious incident took place, affecting not just a stalwart player but the ethos of the sport itself. Nathan Cleary, the esteemed halfback for the Penrith Panthers, became the victim of a dangerous and illegal hip-drop tackle executed by Newcastle Knights player Phoenix Crossland. This reckless move resulted in a compound fracture to Cleary's ankle, cutting short his season and dealing a brutal blow to his career.

Rugby league is a contact sport cherished for its intensity and competitive spirit. However, these qualities must never come at the expense of player safety. Hip-drop tackles, which involve forceful body weight applied directly to a player's lower limb, present a grave risk of injury—as demonstrably evident in Cleary's situation. Such tactics not only threaten the careers of talented athletes but also tarnish the integrity of the sport. We must not allow these deliberate, hazardous actions to proliferate, unhindered.

The NRL Judiciary and Match Review Committee have a responsibility to elevate player welfare as the top priority and to set a precedent that ensures the safety of each athlete on the field. Imposing a severe, long-term suspension on Phoenix Crossland—preferably for 6 months starting at the beginning of the next season—is a necessary step to affirm this commitment.

Statistics from recent NRL seasons indicate a concerning rise in injuries attributed to dangerous tackles, escalating from 15% to over 25% of all recorded injuries on the field. Failure to address this trend head-on undermines the NRL's credibility and poses long-term risks to player health and career longevity.

Players like Nathan Cleary rely on the fair enforcement of rules to play the game they love safely. Imposing stricter penalties for violations is not about punishing individuals for the sake of it, but about upholding a standard that protects all athletes.

We urge the NRL and all stakeholders connected to the sport to take decisive action. Let us stand together to call for a penalty that reflects the severity of the infraction, helping safeguard our athletes from unnecessary harm.

Please sign this petition to urge the NRL Judiciary to take meaningful steps in protecting player safety and preserving the integrity of the sport we hold dear.
