The Issue

Something is wrong with my brain.” Those were the heartbreaking words Brent Simpson told his wife every single day during the final years of his life.

Brent protected our communities as a police officer for nearly two decades. But behind closed doors, a silent catastrophe was unfolding inside his head. He was experiencing devastating insomnia, a terrifying personality shift and debilitating head pressure.

He sought help but his condition was diagnosed as "mental health". On his own, he underwent multiple MRIs, extensive bloodwork, and saw dozens of specialists. Not a single doctor or mental health provider screened him for a brain injury. Because his symptoms looked like depression and PTSD, the medical system treated the "behavior" while completely ignoring the physical trauma to his brain.

It wasn’t until an autopsy was performed after his tragic death that the truth was revealed: Brent was suffering from Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE).

Brent’s story reveals a massive, hidden failure in our healthcare system. Right now, insurance companies and healthcare networks routinely deny neurological testing to individuals presenting with psychiatric symptoms. They demand "psychological stability" before they will pay to look at the physical brain.

It is a deadly Catch-22. We are over-medicating the software (behavior) while completely neglecting a breakdown in the hardware (the brain).

Early detection prevents misdiagnosis and mistreatment. This system is failing:

  • Our First Responders & Veterans exposed to blast forces and combative training.
  • Domestic Violence Survivors living with undiagnosed, repeated head trauma.
  • Youth Athletes cycling through mental health crises after undetected concussions.

The Brent Bill ends the medical runaround. It mandates a simple, zero-bureaucracy standard:

  • Mandatory Rules-Outs: Forces doctors to physically screen high-risk populations for brain trauma before locking them into psychiatric-only diagnoses.
  • Ends Insurance Roadblocks: Legally prohibits insurance companies from denying brain scans or demanding "failed" psychiatric drug trials first.
  • Connected Care: Uses existing data technology so a positive brain injury screen instantly follows a patient from a therapist's couch to a neurologist's clinic.
