The Issue

My name is Kisal Gilchrist, and I am the mother of LaMarvion McKinnon, a beloved son whose life was taken by gun violence in Hopemills, North Carolina.

LaMarvion was more than a headline. He was a young man with a future, a family who loved him deeply, and a life that mattered. His death has devastated our family, and what has followed has only deepened that pain.

Since my son’s murder, I have experienced serious concerns regarding how his case has been handled, including:

Lack of clear and consistent communication with our family

Ongoing fear that victim rights under North Carolina law are not being fully honored
Distress over discussions of a potential plea deal that may not reflect the severity of the crime
A growing sense that transparency and accountability have been missing throughout this process

As a grieving mother, I have had to fight not only for justice for my son, but simply to be heard.

This petition is not about interfering with the legal process or accusing any individual beyond what the courts determine. It is about ensuring justice is pursued fully, victim rights are respected, and the public can trust the system meant to protect them.

WHY THIS MATTERS

When a murder case is mishandled, rushed, or minimized, it sends a dangerous message:

That some lives matter less.

That families must grieve in silence.

That accountability is optional.

This is not just about my son — it is about every family in Fayetteville and across North Carolina who deserves fairness, transparency, and justice.

OUR CALL TO ACTION

We respectfully but firmly call on the following officials and agencies to act:

The Cumberland County District Attorney’s Office

The North Carolina Attorney General

The Fayetteville Mayor and City Leadership

Cumberland County Commissioners

The North Carolina Victims’ Rights Commission

We ask for:

Full compliance with North Carolina Crime Victims’ Rights laws

Transparency in prosecutorial decisions, especially regarding any plea negotiations
Meaningful communication with the victim’s family
A thorough review of this case to ensure justice is not compromised
Independent oversight if necessary to restore public trust

A FAITH-CENTERED APPEAL

As a woman of faith, I believe God is a God of justice, truth, and accountability.

“Let justice roll down like waters, and righteousness like an ever-flowing stream.” — Amos 5:24

I am praying not only for my family, but for every official involved — that decisions will be guided by integrity, courage, and compassion.

Justice delayed or diminished is justice denied.
