Sophie Lee was a beloved Ballroom Mother, a daughter, and a pillar of Baltimore's LGBTQ+ community. On a Friday morning in September, she was shot and killed. Days later, no suspect has been identified and no motive has been named. Her killer is still walking free.

Sophie built family where the world too often withheld it. She was a former client and friend to staff at Baltimore Safe Haven, a Black and trans-led organization that has supported the city's LGBTQ+ community for years. She was tied to some of ballroom's most respected houses, and this past spring she was honored as Best New Overall Mother, a title that reflected how many people she had already lifted up in her short life.

"She was a person. She was loved. She mattered," said Iya Dammons, CEO of Baltimore Safe Haven, after Sophie's death. "She deserved the opportunity to live, grow, laugh, love, and simply exist safely as herself."

Sophie is at least the 23rd trans woman reported killed in the United States this year, and most of those victims, like Sophie, were Black trans women. This is not an isolated tragedy. It is part of a pattern the Baltimore Police Department has the power, and the responsibility, to break by treating Sophie's case with the same urgency any homicide investigation deserves.

Baltimore Safe Haven has already stepped up, holding a vigil and raising funds to support Sophie's family and community. Now the Baltimore Police Department must do its part: dedicate real investigative resources to finding Sophie's killer and bringing them to justice.
