Demand justice for Luis Travieso and similar cases

The Issue

My name is Ulissa Montero, and I am writing to ask, on behalf of my family and myself, that my stepfather, Luis Travieso, be released from immigration custody or granted a second opportunity to remain in the United States. My stepfather has been in this country since 1969, when he arrived from Cuba at just three years old. The United States is the only home he has ever known. He grew up here, built his life here, and raised his family here. This country is not just where he lives it is where his entire life is rooted. More than two decades ago, in the 1990s, my stepfather made a serious mistake. He was arrested, held accountable, and served his sentence in full. Since then, for over 23 years, he has lived as a law-abiding and hardworking man. He accepted responsibility for his past and committed himself to doing better for his family and for himself. To me, he is not defined by a mistake made long ago. He is the man who showed up for our family, worked hard, and stood by my mother. He is a devoted husband to a U.S. citizen and a father and stepfather to U.S. citizen children who depend on him. Our family is currently facing an unimaginable hardship. My mother is battling cancer and undergoing treatment. During this time, she needs her husband emotionally, physically, and financially. Watching her fight for her health while also fearing the loss of her life partner has been devastating for our entire family. I believe in accountability, but I also believe in fairness, compassion, and second chances. My stepfather paid his debt to society long ago. Continuing to detain or deport him does not serve justice or public safety. It only causes unnecessary harm to an American family that has already endured enough. I respectfully ask that full discretion be exercised and that my stepfather be evaluated based on the life he has lived for more than two decades since his conviction. Please allow him the opportunity to remain in the only country he has ever known and to continue being the husband and father our family needs. By signing this petition, you can help us show that these families deserve to remain intact and that second chances are the cornerstone of a just society. Please sign and share this petition to demand justice for Luis Travieso and countless others who are facing similar challenges. Together, we can make a difference.
