PETITION: Demand Justice for Local Foster Child Brutally Assaulted in Shippensburg

We, the residents of Shippensburg and surrounding communities, are standing up to demand absolute accountability, safety, and justice for a vulnerable child in our town. What happened on April 3, 2026, and the subsequent failure of our local systems to protect this family, is an unacceptable stain on our community.

The Incident: A Merciless Attack on a Child

On April 3, 2026, a 13-year-old boy was cornered in the bathroom of the Sheetz on King Street. He was restrained and mercilessly beaten by a group that included both a juvenile and grown adults. The attack was so severe that it left him with permanent facial scarring. It took nearly a month for the dozens of fist marks and handprints across his face, arms, back, and neck to physically heal.

Worse still, the victim’s brother was forced to witness the assault—watching his little brother’s blood fly from his face, nose, and mouth at the hands of adults.

The Aftermath: Ongoing Terror and Systemic Failure

For this young boy, the physical wounds were only the beginning. After spending several years bouncing through the foster care system, he had finally found his forever home. He found a mother who loves him unconditionally, siblings who care for him, and a family that was actively beginning the adoption process.

That hard-won peace has been completely shattered.

Because of ongoing safety threats and overwhelming amount of trauma, this child had to be removed from town. The harassment has not stopped. Just before Independence Day, individuals possibly connected to the attack broke into the victim's brother's truck—ransacking the interior and pouring soda into the gas tank to destroy it. When called, the police took four hours to respond, dismissively telling the family "it is what it is."

The victim has required intense treatment and support to process this trauma. Meanwhile, the victims are the ones being forced to uproot their lives and move away for their own safety, while the perpetrators remain free in our neighborhood.

The Problem: A Plea Deal is Not Justice

The District Attorney’s office has informed the family that because this is a first offense, the adults and juvenile involved will likely be allowed to plea down to "simple assault," receive probation, and enter rehabilitation programs.

This is not justice. A slap on the wrist for a coordinated, brutal assault on a child sends a dangerous message: that our legal system cares more about protecting violent offenders than defending innocent children.

OUR DEMANDS:

No Lenient Plea Deals: We demand that the District Attorney’s office prosecute the adults and juvenile involved to the fullest extent of the law. Aggravated assault and child endangerment charges must not be reduced to a simple probation sentence.

Accountability for Retaliation: We demand a thorough, immediate investigation into the vehicle vandalism and ongoing harassment of the family, with full charges brought against those responsible.
