The Issue

We are calling on San Diego Police Chief Scott Wahl to immediately terminate Officer Daniel Gold II and urging District Attorney Summer Stephan to charge him with Aggravated Manslaughter. On January 28, 2025, 16-year-old Konoa Wilson was running for his life. Surveillance footage confirms that Konoa was fleeing from an active shooter at the Santa Fe Depot when he rounded a corner and encountered SDPD Officer Daniel Gold II. Without warning, without identifying himself as law enforcement, and without Konoa brandishing a weapon or posing a threat, Officer Gold fired two shots into the teenager's back. Konoa was pronounced dead less than an hour later.  A Historic Failure of Policing
In December 2025, the San Diego City Council approved a $30 million settlement to Konoa’s family, the largest payout for a police killing in United States history, surpassing even the George Floyd settlement. While the city calls this a "business decision," the community knows it is the price of a catastrophic failure in "protect and serve." While the public was led to believe Officer Gold was on suspension, investigative reports and California Public Records Act (CPRA) requests have revealed a disturbing reality. Gold was found posting bulletins identifying himself as an "Acting Detective" assisting robbery investigations. When questioned, the department initially denied it, but the CPRA request confirmed he was using the title. Under SDPD policy, serving in this capacity for a specific duration qualifies an officer for a 5% pay increase. 1. Immediate Termination: Chief Scott Wahl must fire Officer Daniel Gold II. A $30 million liability should not remain on the force, especially after misrepresenting his rank and role during a pending investigation.
2. Criminal Prosecution: District Attorney Summer Stephan must bring charges of Aggravated Manslaughter. The body-worn camera footage shows a reckless disregard for life that meets the criteria for a first-degree felony.
3. Accountability: A full audit of why an officer under investigation for a fatal shooting was permitted to assume "Acting Detective" duties.
Konoa Wilson deserved a future. Instead, his life was taken by the very person sworn to protect it. Sign this petition to demand real accountability. We cannot allow the historic $30 million payout, the largest in U.S. history for a police killing, to be the end of this story. Money is not accountability. True justice for 16-year-old Konoa Wilson requires that the officer responsible for his death no longer carries a badge, a gun, or the ability to harm another person.
