Demand justice for Grant and promote non-lethality in rescues

The Issue

Grant was a beautiful soul who was taken in by a rescue organization from a shelter with the hope of offering him a second chance at life. He was scheduled to participate in a prison dog program, a wonderful initiative that has benefited many dogs and prisoners alike by fostering empathy and rehabilitation. However, Grant was deprived of this opportunity when his life was abruptly cut short.  https://www.instagram.com/reel/DTGFoUTDoWC/?igsh=MTV2ZDNjdm1sbmNudg==

The trigger was a singular incident: Grant snapped at a puppy. Rather than addressing this behavior with training—a common and often effective remedy—the rescue made the irreversible decision to euthanize him. Grant was not sick, nor was he beyond help; he was simply not given the chance to learn and grow.

This situation highlights a pressing issue within some rescue operations: the choice of lethal over non-lethal options. It's a disservice to the animals, potential adopters, and the dedicated teams that work tirelessly in animal welfare.

Statistics from the ASPCA indicate that behavioral issues are one of the leading reasons for euthanasia in shelter animals. Yet, comprehensive training programs have shown a high success rate in mitigating many of these behaviors.

The tragedy of Grant's case is not isolated, but it doesn’t have to continue. We are calling on rescue organizations to commit to exploring all non-lethal interventions, including professional behavior evaluations and training programs, before considering euthanasia. Let’s push for policies that prioritize the well-being of animals and give them the chances they deserve.

We urge stakeholders—be it rescue organizations, advocacy groups, or policy makers—to re-evaluate current protocols and invest in effective training solutions. Not only does this align with the humane ethos of animal rescue, but it also strengthens community trust and support.

Please join us in advocating for Grant and others like him by signing this petition. Help us make a change so that no more beautiful lives are needlessly lost.
