The Issue

This week in Durham, a horrifying event unfolded that shook the community to its core. During an armed robbery, an innocent dog was shot, an act of senseless violence that cannot go unpunished. This isn't just a case of animal cruelty; it's about ensuring safety and justice for everyone involved, both human and animal.

The pain this act of violence has caused are immeasurable—not only to the family of the pet but to the entire community who is rattled by the incident. Pets are beloved family members, companions who are loyal and offer unconditional love. To see such a loyal creature harmed in this way is heartbreaking, and it sends a troubling message about the value of life.

The statistics are alarming: according to the FBI, communities with higher incidents of animal abuse often see a correlation with other forms of crime. Let us not allow Durham to be put in that category. By seeking justice for this dog, we stand up for the values of safety, kindness, and communal respect.

Our call to action is simple, yet crucial. We urge the Durham Police Department and local government to prioritize this case. Proper investigative resources must be dedicated to not only bring justice to the perpetrators but also to deter future acts of violence. Security in our neighborhoods, accountability in enforcement, and a clear message that animal cruelty is intolerable are essential.

We need your help. By signing this petition, you stand with us in demanding action and advocating for victims who cannot speak for themselves. Lend your voice to push for justice and ensure a safer, more compassionate community for all of Durham's residents. Please sign and share this petition, lighting a path to justice and change.

The Decision Makers

Clarence Birkhead
Durham County Sheriff
Responded
The Sheriff’s Office shares that two suspects were arrested within hours of the crime. Thanks to quick community reporting, deputies were able to locate individuals matching the description of the suspects and found them in possession of items that tied them to the robbery. One of the suspects, age 18, was charged immediately. The second suspect is a juvenile, and under North Carolina law the Sheriff’s Office cannot discuss juvenile court proceedings, but both cases are moving forward. The Sheriff’s Office emphasized: “It is not okay to rob innocent people at gunpoint, and we condemn harming innocent animals.” They also expressed their commitment to holding those responsible accountable.
