Demand justice for dog shot by Saskatchewan police

The Issue

In the quiet neighborhoods of Regina Saskatchewan, a tragic incident unfolded during a custody fight over a dog when police officers shot and injured  a beloved family pet.  The dog was stolen by a non custodial guardian.  But instead of solving the dispute peacefully, police instead shot and injured the stolen and scared dog.  https://www.sasktoday.ca/regina-today/regina-news/regina-officer-shoots-dog-during-theft-investigation-on-athol-street-10663450

This incident has left a deep scar not only on the family but also on the community that has long trusted police officers to protect rather than harm innocent creatures.  https://www.sasktoday.ca/regina-today/regina-news/dog-shot-by-regina-police-raises-concerns-from-animal-lawyer-10697550

The dog, seen by the family as a loyal companion and loving friend, ran towards police officers amidst the chaos, possibly confused and seeking protection for their family. Instead of de-escalating the situation using alternative and safe measures, the officers chose to use violent force against the animal. In doing so, they highlighted a glaring gap in police training and protocol pertaining to interactions with animals.

Police officers in Saskatchewan, as in many other places, are not sufficiently trained to handle situations involving animals. This lack of training not only endangers the lives of animals but also affects public trust in law enforcement. Statistics show that incidents of police shooting dogs have been alarmingly high, with many cases not being thoroughly investigated, leaving pet gaurdians without justice or closure.

Police departments should collaborate with animal welfare organizations to develop humane training programs that inform officers on how to safely and compassionately manage encounters with animals. Moreover, there needs to be a separate protocol in place for tackling animal-related disputes, including the option of calling in animal rescue teams that can professionally and non-violently resolve these situations.

This petition seeks not only justice for the dog but also calls for systemic change. By demanding the establishment of comprehensive training programs and protocols, we can prevent future tragedies and ensure that our police force is equipped to handle all members of the community, human and animal alike, with respect and care.
